If you are tied into a few of Google’s services, Gmail for one, adding your accounts to Windows Phone is straight forward, it’s a simple matter of settings/accounts and add new. It will support Google apps accounts as well, so custom domains. Google reader though, had some serious social features that are essential in the life of a dedicated technology addict, the most important was sharing. Sharing with other reader users and from your account to other social services like Facebook and Twitter. Google Reader is my preferred news aggregator, I’ve been using it for years, and even in IE9 on Windows Phone, it works like a charm. In it’s need to promote it’s Google+ service, the search giant is changing the way things work and look with a lot of their services. Thus in their wisdom they have killed the share feature in reader.
While I’d like Google to respond to the bad publicity they are getting and put the feature back, it’s more likely that they will hold out and expect people to take their sharing to Google+.
There are a few apps I’ve been trying on WP that offer all sorts of functionality, and some of the same as reader. and I thought I would highlight a couple of those in the next couple of days. Two to start with will be Next Gen Reader, a Windows Phone Google Reader Client, and Weave. Another full featured reader from @selesgames. Both offer sharing, Next Gen feeds straight from your reader account. Google while seemingly improving their product are degrading the service for a lot of people, and seem to not be bothered. When people move to other services they may start to listen.
