Ah Windows 10 the upgrade we all want but we cannot all have. At the same time that is!
Windows 10 was “released” to the masses on July 29th 2015. Released should be used loosely. Sure, free for current users, great start. What wasn’t and still isn’t great is the update process itself. It certainly sounds easy enough. “Your PC will be updated to Windows 10 through the Windows Update program”.
But let’s be honest. Windows has never been that easy to upgrade or install….. Ever
And they haven’t disappointed this time around either! Don’t get me wrong, for some users, the upgrade has been buttery smooth. But for others it seems the road is a little more, bumpy.
Not only does the update not occur automatically for some. It doesn’t work manually either. There have been a few hints and tips on the internet.
Then if you are lucky it will update. If you are unlucky, you will have a big file (up to 6GB) sitting on your hard drive ( C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download) Then you have to go through and delete it again and force the update.
Neither of these ways worked for me. Instead, I downloaded the “media creation tool” direct from the Microsoft website. Easy from there right? Wrong! If I clicked “Upgrade this PC now” it would give me an error and the program would not work again until I rebooted my pc! Clicking the “install media on another PC” seemed to do the trick! A few hours later Windows 10 was installing on my HP Ultrabook!
I am now a proud owner of a Windows 10 laptop. And am currently updating the Xbox app so I can test the Xbox one streaming. Being part of the Windows Preview program I must say, this release of Windows 10 looks and feels amazing. It’s only been literally 2 days since launch, even with all the testing over the months bugs are sure to come up here and there. But for now it’s safe to say that Windows 10 has been a success. It is now up to Microsoft to continue this success, How did your update proceed, smoothly, or did you have to use one of the alternative methods?
