Seems like some info has inadvertently leaked. Telstra is at least considering bringing a Nokia Windows Phone to Oz. Channel News, is reporting in what would be considered a post script to an article, that in talks with a Telstra Executive, that the said Telstra employee, un named, has confirmed to them that Nokia’s Windows phones are being considered for the local market. The site is quoting promotional materials leaked earlier in the week. which appeared on PocketNow.com, and little else. I’m always a little sceptical when no sources for anything in a post are quoted. Channel Now asserts that in talks with a Telstra Executive, interest had been expressed in bringing the new Nokia models to Australia. Oh, there may be a problem
“The issue will be whether consumers are prepared to invest in a Windows based model. They haven’t in the past”
If the expression of lack of interest in Windows Phone is pertinent for the local market, it seems unlikely that the devices will be pushed by local carriers. Yet Nokia’s device popularity and reliability, brand recognition and design sensibility, would make you think that they could sell Windows Phone in Australia. Now a device that looks and runs like the Nokia N9, running Windows Phone, could be a winner in the local market. The fact that there is no corroboration for the claims, the Telstra exec quoted responses are anonymous, do not lend the source any credulity.
The device will initially be launched at Nokia World, as the Finish Company desperately tries to gain sales traction, after consumers in the millions dumped Nokia brand phones for new Android and Apple smartphones.
Without positive/credible sources, notice the quote above, all links are on site advertising links, this is just hearsay so that Telstra exec could be anyone. The only thing that rings true in the whole article is the fact that Windows Mobile/Windows Phone does not have a large user base in the antipodes, and that those that use it are fanatical. If the Telstra Exec that’s anonymously quoted is really on the ball he would have realised that the Nokia whilst it’s N9 is just appearing locally, is not out of the Symbian market here. Telstra, being a premier Windows Phone/Microsoft partner, has to strike a balance between the old and the new. Thinking that at least the HTC Titan will be coming to Telstra soon, it’s feasible to think a more conservative/more well known brand like Nokia, could make a dent in the local market with Windows Phone. Would though a local anonymous Telstra Exec, let info like this slip, on the twelfth of October when we expect the Searay, at Nokia World on October twenty sixth. It would be nice to think that the Nokia Windows Phone will come to Australia early, quickly. If you cannot give me a source, confirm your news, why should I take it seriously?
